The Legal Department, serving under General Counsel - Amanda Keton, oversee all legal matters for the Foundation and focus on key initiatives to help support the community consistent with our Foundation goals and values. We deal with a wide range of issues and projects, including community development, disinformation, domestic and international contracts, employment law, ethics, fundraising and grant law, human rights, international law, internet law, litigation, non-profit corporate governance, policy drafting, privacy law, public policy, trademark and copyright law and trust and safety.
Note: For legal ethical reasons, we unfortunately can only represent the Wikimedia Foundation and cannot be the attorney for the community or movement organizations, though the legal team often provides strong support to the community in many ways consistent with Wikimedia Foundation goals.
Community Resilience and Sustainability is a wing of the Legal department, led by the Vice President of Community Resilience & Sustainability Maggie Dennis. We consist of Community Development, Human Rights, Movement Strategy and Governance, and Trust and Safety. Sustainability and Resilience are essential to the wellbeing of groups with shared aims. They refer to the ability of a community to thrive in terms of its systems, structures, and community relationships over time, and to the capacity of the community to absorb and recover from damage or threat. The goal of the community resilience & sustainability division of the Wikimedia Foundation is to support the movement in maturing its systems to achieve the key essential factors of both resilience and sustainability on the journey towards the sum of all human knowledge, both through directly run programs and through supporting as appropriate the work of other departments.

The Global Advocacy team helps the Foundation and affiliates protect the free knowledge movement through advocacy and public policy. The simple act of sharing knowledge freely online is radical and challenging in many contexts, and can be threatened by weak or hostile policy environments. This is why the Foundation and broader community engage in advocacy and public policy work. We work alongside the Wikimedia community because policy change is most successful when informed by those who are most directly impacted and best understand their local context. Together, we stand for policies that support and protect the Wikimedia model, its people, and its values. The Global Advocacy team is part of the Legal Department, and works with other teams and departments across the Foundation. To protect the community-governed model, we take action on policies related to access to knowledge and free expression. To protect the people in our community, we advocate for privacy rights and against mass surveillance. To protect the values of our movement, we lead by example by prioritizing human rights and countering disinformation.
